Online shopping is a norm in today’s society. It’s just easier to get things off the internet than actually physically going to a store to buy it. However, how safe is it? Push aside not being able to physically look at the items and having issues like the sizing, materials and such, however there have been cases where after you have made payment, the online store, goes missing (we’ve experienced it first hand). Just remember to follow a few of these basic tips and you’ll be just fine.
1. Background Check
There are hundreds and hundreds of online stores, and some selling similar items. How do you pick where to shop? Here is where Google comes in handy. Just Google the name of online store, and chances are you’ll find feedback from other customers as well. Usually, we’d recommend purchasing from online stores that a friend has purchased from, or if there is good traffic on the store. This is safe because there is legit feedback and there are actually a few people who have been purchasing from them.
2. Get Details
When making payment, the online store owner will provide you with their bank account number and details. This may not be sufficient as if they suddenly dissapear, and you want to make a report, the banks are not allowed to freeze the account based on a few messages (especially if it’s Facebook). If it is not provided, please ask for full company details (including handphone number and address, if possible). There’s no such thing as too much information.
3. Secure Websites
Make it a point to only use secure websites when you do fund transfers through the website. Once you’ve done your background check, and are comfortable making payment to the site you are purchasing from, ensure your card details are being processed using a secure connection.
4. Be Cautious When Typing
When typing in information, make sure to be extra cautious, and make sure you double check before confirming anything. Simple things like mispelled addresses, payment amount, and wrong item name or code can cause many technical difficulties that may take a really long time to solve (or never get solved at all!). Make it a habit to pay extra attention when typing and not be distracted when making purchases.
5. Keep A Copy of Everything
It is an absolute must, to keep a record of everything you purchase. All forms of receipts (even online transactions need to be printscreened and saved). Make a simple sheet with the records of item puchased, from what online store, date and time of payment, as well as the transaction number.
