It’s hard not to notice how cats are turning heads in the fashion world. Where did it all come from? How did it turn into such a trend? Why cats? From where we stand, Tumblr or Pinterest may have something to do with this. Or hipsters, even. After all, they are known for putting on the stuff you wouldn’t wear, wear it on ironically, and before you know it, it’s a trend!
So where do cats get off becoming the new trend? Who made it so?
Just recently, Glamour magazine launched the Glamour’s Cat Fashion Concept Store – a fashion concept store that’s dedicated all things that purr. Truth be told, it’s quite possibly the best thing to ever exist. Located in the meatpacking district of New York, the Cat Fashion Concept Store features a wall of ‘fashion cat history’, that includes the iconic Glamour x Opening Ceremony cat sweatshirt, Grace Coddington’s Balenciaga cat bag, and even Fashion Fuhrer, Karl Lagerfeld and his cat, Choupette.
Mr. Gugu and Miss Go
Having cats on clothes and accessories can be adorable if done tastefully. Polish brand, Mr. Gugu and Miss Go does a fantastic job producing jumpers with pictures of adorable cats against psychedelic backdrops, and believe us, we’ll start wiping them off the racks if we could find them here. So if you plan on getting some cute cat jumpers, ditch the frumpy Christmas knits and get yourself something vivid and vibrant from Mr. Gugu and Miss Go and tell the world how fashionable your kittens are. No pun intended.

Streetwear is not where cat fashion stops. It’s even taken a lead on high (and not-so-high) fashion. Victoria Beckham collaborated with 27-year-old director, Quentin Jones to release a quirky video for Beckham’s new lower priced line Victoria, that launched in February in the US. There’s no need to explain — yes, the concept involves cats. Even the 2012 collection featured adorable cat prints.

Also taking cats to another level includes those adorable Charlotte Olympia cat slippers that’s absolutely to die for. Bear in mind they can cost you at least RM1500, so it may be time to look for alternatives. High-street brands like Topshop and Urban Outfitters are going overboard with their cats. Perhaps it’s an attempt to be even more ironic, but the cat designs are getting way too prominent and over-priced. Would you pay RM900 for a bomber jacket with a cat on it? We highly doubt so.

When it comes to cat fashion, we highly recommend investing in cheaper cat-shionista products before they run out, and to wear them now before the heat dies. The fashion world is still not over cats, and by the looks of it, it’ll be a while until it dies down. Plus, it doesn’t matter if you’re accused for being a cat lady. Cats are pretty cool and owning 10 cat print tops is probably not as bad as owning 10 cats. Right?
