Breakups can be really messy and leave you feeling confused and angry. It could be caused by many reasons (which we will not go into) but the outcome can cause a lot of pain and stress. This whole process is unavoidable, however here are some ways that can make it more tolerable and maybe help you get through it faster.

Letting go of things

Ever heard the saying “out with the old, in with the new”? A break up doesn’t neccesarily have to be a bad thing. A break up can also be the start of something new and meaningful for yourself (to heal, to reconnect and to have some ‘me’ time). Start with cleaning and getting rid of memories in your space (for most of us, this means room). Teddy bears, letters, cards, trinklets and all that, everything has to go. By doing so, in a way, it’s like you are slowly giving away old painful memories you no longer want. Some of these things could be of significance to you, but just store it away and give yourself some time and space.

Go through the grieving phase

Allow yourself to grieve, after all you’ve invested so much of yourself into something that had to end. It’s only natural to be human and feel so many emotions. If you need to cry, cry but remember there should be a limit. Go through the phase for a few days, but don’t forget to pick yourself up right after. You can cry and vent for a few days, but when the hurt fades (even a little) pick yourself up and move forward. Life has so much more to offer!

Accept the situation

It’s only natural to go through a stage of denial, but the sooner you learn to accept the situation for what it is, the sooner you will be able to pick up the pieces of your life and move on. By accepting your mistakes, and forgiving yourself (and the other person), you allow yourself to accept that it is finally over and that you need to be the best version of you that you can be.

Pick yourself up

Here’s the most important part of overcoming a break up, the ability to pick yourself up and decide to make a positive change in your life. Spend some alone time doing things that you want to do, that make you happy and keep you busy. Something as simple as giving yourself a home facial or manicure is an instant pick-me-up.

Surround yourself with good people

Be around people who love you and support you. Surrounding yourself with friends and family who understand your situation and are willing to make an effort to talk you through it and also distract you makes it so much easier. Knowing that you have people who will have your back, and love you regardless plays a huge role in helping you be steady on your feet again.
