Margaret Thatcher, former UK Prime Minister and the only female to hold the post, has passed away of stroke today at the age of 87.
The news was reported by a number of agencies and has since then gone viral in the online sphere. Born Margaret Roberts in October 1925, she started to be politically active in the 1950s and went on to win the 1979 general election. During her tenure as Prime Minister, she earned the nickname ‘Iron Lady’ which described her leadership style during her 11 years in power. Not only was Margaret Thatcher the first and until now the only female British Prime Minister, she was also the longest serving Prime Minister in the 20th century British politics. She was married to Denis Thatcher, a businessman, and with whom she had two children, Mark and Carol.
The Independent quoted Lord Bell, Margaret Thatcher’s spokesperson, saying: “It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning. A further statement will be made later.”
Margaret Thatcher was a woman who changed the political scene in the United Kingdom, and her passing was a shock to many of us. Her intelligence and determination will always be remembered and she’ll remain a source of inspiration to females across the globe.
