As much as we love doing our make up, we seem to keep neglecting a really essential thing we need to do – cleaning our make up brushes. These are our daily tools that help us enchance our masterpieces (our faces!) and could cause a lot of problems to our overall beauty regime or skincare if not taken care of properly. The brushes acquire particles of the make up used as well as dead skin cells and oils over a period of time that create a breeding ground for bacteria.
Quality make up brushes are worth the investment. As long as you take care of them, it’ll last for the long run and you may never have to replace it. Here are a few easy steps you can do to prevent any damage to your brushes and also how to clean them.
– Wipe off excess makeup left on your brushes after each time you use it. Use a wet wipe or facial wipes to clean the brushes gently. Make sure to not pull at it too much, as the bristles of the brushes can break or bend easily.
– There are actual products to clean make up brushes and they have it at several price ranges, it can be quite steep. A good alternative is using hair shampoo that’s very, very mild. Think Johnson’s baby shampoo, or anything that doesn’t contain conditioner. Also , you’ll need tea tree oil.
– Once or twice every two weeks, use the baby shampoo to wash the brushes as they act as a less chemical wash and cleans all the excess residue of the make up. Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil and wipe the brushes as it has anti-bacterial properties. The easiest way to do this is to fill a bowl with warm water and add the baby shampoo and tea tree oil. Put the brushes in and gently use your fingers to wash and spread it and wipe against your palm for a few minutes. Rinse it off and shape it back to it’s original shape. Hang them to dry with the bristles at the bottom, instead of placing them on a flat surface. This will make it easier for the brushes to maintain shape and also dry all the extra water that could cause bacteria to breed.
– Keep your brushes stored nicely in a make up brush bag or a bag that has compartments for each brush. This will help you keep your brushes organized, as well as seperate the clean ones from the used ones. Also, make sure the brushes are not kept in a place with direct heat as that will cause the bristles to spoil.
