A vacation in paradise had turned into a nightmare when an American tourist was gang raped in Rio de Janeiro, in front of her boyfriend.
The couple boarded a mini-bus just last week when the operators ordered the other passengers to get off and inflicted a “party of evil” on the couple. Three assailants took turns raping the woman and beating the man, who was handcuffed and sometimes struck with a metal crowbar. The assailants too turns driving, driving out of Rio into the city of Niteroi, where they went on a spending spree with the tourists’ credit cards.
Police investigator, Alexandre Braga said that once they hit the limit on both credit cards, spending up to US$500 at gas stations and convenience stores, the suspects drove the pair back to Rio and forced the woman to fetch another credit card.
According to Braga, the woman did not dare call for help as “the young man was still under the suspects’ control and she feared something even worse might happen to him”. Six hours after they were kidnapped, the tourists were dumped by the side of the highway, 30 miles out of Rio. The managed to reach a consulate, where staff helped them contact police. The rape victim has returned home, while the male victim is still in Brazil helping officers with their inquiries.
Three men were also arrested on suspicion of the crime. “The victim recognised the three without a shadow of a doubt”, Mr Braga said. The men’s mugshots were also recognised by another woman who said she’d been raped by the three men under the same circumstances last month.
