Fitting rooms were made for us to try on the clothes before buying them. But what if someone started to charge you on trying it on before you even buy it?

According to sources, well-known fashion designer Vera Wang received backlash in China for its outrageous charging fee on trying on gowns at the label’s new Shanghai bridal store.

Situated in Huangpu district, the new Shanghai bridal store is Vera Wang’s first store in China and also her largest flagship store. The 80 dresses showcased in the store were all priced between 30,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan (RM15,000 – RM150,000).

However, the new store is the only flagship store that requires customers to pay 3,000 yuan (MYR1496) for a 90-minute time slot. It is reported that THEcharging fee is non-refundable unless you purchase the gown that deducted the fee from the final price. The Global Times reports that the policy aims to “protect the copyright of the designer”, as a statement from the company read. Photos are also forbidden in the store.

Vera Wang isn’t the only the brand that has the practice of charging a “trying fee” as several other bridal shops have similar practices. This is to prevent customers form stealing the design and just trying out for fun.
