Coffee has always been a great way in helping us to stay awake at work but apparently this is not their only benefit!
According to our source, the researchers from University of Sydney found that caffeine lower down the risk of road accidents. The researcher compared 530 commercial vehicle drivers who had recently crashed with 517 who had not. The factors such as age, sleep patterns and kilometres driven were taken into account and the study found drivers who consumed coffee, tea or caffeine energy drinks were 63 percent less likely to fall asleep at the wheel than those who did not take any caffeinated substances.
The researchers said that the use of caffeinated substances could be a useful adjunct strategy in the maintenance of alertness while driving. 43 percent of drivers in the survey reported using caffeine to stay awake; only three percent reported using illegal stimulants such as amphetamine.
The researchers noted that further study was required as the real cure for fatigue is not clear yet. However, the UK road safety experts recommend drivers “get a good night’s sleep” before climbing behind the wheel.
