Throughout the years, we’ve seen movies that inspire us in one way or another in our life . Most of them were heart-warming and touching and some of them got us breaking down into uncontrollable tears. But there are times where we find the animated short films are far more enjoyable to watch. These animated short films are often taken in an artistic ways and usually contains deeper meaning than the way it shows. The stunning visuals and great storytelling have stolen our heart away and there’s nothing but expectation we wanted more from these short films. As we’ve seen countless short films before, we’ve chosen our favourite shorts out of all the films and here are the animated short films you shouldn’t miss!
1. Adam & Dog
Directed by Minkyu Lee, “Adam and Dog” is a story when a dog that wandered around the Garden of Eden until he met the first man created by God, Adam. The relationship between the man and the dog turns out pretty good but things changed when the first woman on earrt, Eve came along. But eventually the dog and the man are back together after a series of unfortunate events. The film was nominated for the 85th Academy Award and won Best Animated Short Subject at the 39th Annie Award.
2. Head Over Heels
The marriage grown apart and the old couple lived their life in a separate ways, literally. With the husband living on the floor and the wife living on the ceiling, the film literally shows how couple live differently after the love drifted apart. But, true love will never drift apart and they get back together in a touching and romantic way. Timothy Reckard’s “Head Over Heels” is a student film directed by Timothy Reckart who has won a number of prizes including the Best Student Film prize at Annie Awards.
3. French Roast
Directed by Fabrice O. Jubert, “French Roast” is a short film about a high-class businessman who encountered a series of events in a coffee shop as he forgot to bring wallet to pay for his coffee. The man never left the coffee shop due to embarrassment and he had no choice but keeps on ordering coffee. The businessman meets some characters in the film including a beggar who came to the coffee shop once in a while. Eventually, the beggar has helped the devastated businessman.
Dubbed as the shortest film ever nominated for Oscar, “Fresh Guacamole” is an approximately 2-minute short film directed by PES (Adam Pesapene). The film is definitely one film that shows more of the unique visuals than story-telling. In fact, the film is creative in its own way that instantly got us hooked. Making a fresh Guacamole has never seem so interesting especially when they are made out of obscure objects.
5. Paperman
“Paperman” is another award-winning short film by Disney’s Pixar that tells a simple yet sweet love story with B&W effect for the film. Created by John Kahr, the film tells a story of a lonely young man’s life took an unexpected turn after meeting a beautiful woman on his morning commute. When he discovers her in a building across the way from him, he made all the paper airplanes to get her attention but failed to do so. In the end, the papers in the film have magically helped him to get her attention and get together.
6. Geri’s Game
“Geri’s Game” won Best Animated Short film at the 1997 Academy Awards with its unique storytelling. The film is also Pixar’s first shorts after 1989 Knick Knack and The film is about an old man who plays chess against himself at the park as he plays both sides of himself. With “white” being the thoughtful side and “black” being the aggressive side, the game came to a surprise ending that overturns the result. Although it is a one-man show in the short film, but the character has definitely left a deep impression on us.
7. The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore
“The Fantastic Flying Books of Morris Lessmore” is a short film tells a story of a young man who loves reading books and writing came across a library full of flying books after his city is destroyed by hurricane. Then the 15-minute film began to take on a journey of the man in the library. Created by William Joyce, the short film is rather uplifting with its magical flying books as well the charming book illustration. The whole film is done beautifully with amazing techniques and brilliant art style.
