It’s World Poetry Day, today! Yes, there is such a thing, and it is such a great thing to have! Poetry is an ancient art form, that seems to be coming more and more extinct. Every 21 of March is World Poetry Day declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999. The whole idea of the day is to reflect on the power of language and to support language diversity as well as promote reading, writing, and teaching poetry throughout the world.
Poetry played a big role in our lives, especially throughout primary and high school, where we’d engage in it through literature classes. It contributes to knowledge of the art form, creativity and questioning our usage of words and perceptions. Through this, we learn metaphors and to think outside the box as poetry from time to time carries various meanings to it.
Many people around the world celebrate World Poetry Day as it is looked at as an opportunity for people to be introduced to poetry, as well as an invitation to reflect on the power of language and the full development of each person’s creative abilities with words. Today should be the day you whip out a notebook and tried your hand at some creative writing!
