Google is killing off Google Reader, along with eight more services as part of its spring cleaning effort, to give users a new kind of computing environment.

On the Official Google Reader Blog, Google Reader will officially retire on July 1, 2013 as the “usage of Google Reader has declined”, and they aim to pour their energy into fewer products, which will make for a better user experience.

SVP of Technical Infrastructure, Urs Holzle states,”While the product has a loyal following, over the years usage has declined. So, on July 1, 2013, we will retire Google Reader. Users and developers interested in RSS alternatives can export their data, including their subscriptions, with Google Takeout over the course of the next four months”.

There’s also been some outrage over the death of Google Reader. A petition called “Keep Google Reader Running” has already earned up to 70,000 signatures.
