Uh-oh! BlackBerry smartphone users, looks like you wouldn’t be able to use Yahoo anymore as Yahoo! Inc is planning to shut down seven products, including its mobile app for BlackBerry smartphones!
According to our source, Yahoo! announced the product shutdowns on its official company blog on Friday. The new chief executive Marissa Mayer take a pages from Google’s playbook by eliminating the unsuccessful products en masse.
The shutdown is Yahoo!’s second products shutdown since Mayer, a former Google executive, became the CEO of the struggling Web portal in July. It was a regular feature at Google to announce the “spring cleaning” announcements as well.
“The most critical question we ask is whether the experience is truly a daily habit that still resonates for all of you today,” wrote Jay Rossiter, Yahoo!’s executive vice-president of Platforms.
Mayer noted that the apps will be reduced down from 60 or 75 apps to 12 or 15 apps so that it’s easier to manage.
The app for BlackBerry smartphones would no longer be available for download, or supported by Yahoo!, as of April 1. Consumers must download the Yahoo! Avatars – the cartoon-like digital characters and re-upload the information to their personalised Yahoo! profile as Yahoo is no longer supporting the apps.
The other Yahoo! products set to be terminated include Yahoo! App Search, Yahoo! Sports IQ, Yahoo! Clues, the Yahoo! Message Boards website and the Yahoo! Updates API.
Yahoo! Inc has previously shut down its Korean service on the last day of 2012 as it was replaced by other Korean search engines such as Naver and Daum.
