1. Avoid Caffeine
Even though you need that cup of coffee in the morning to wake yourself up, caffeine will only trigger your mood swings, as it amplifies your blood sugar and hormone levels. This means that you’ll be more irritable and angry, so switch to decaf or opt for tea instead.
2. Exercise
Being physically active will increase the circulation of blood in your body, releasing all your ‘feel-good’ hormones. It relieves stress, and you’ll feel even more relaxed and calm after.
3. Create a Calm and Serene Space
You know the saying “sleep on it”? Learning how to let go instead of over-reacting will go a long way. Take deep breaths and create a calm space, whether its in your home, or your mind. You can look to meditation if it helps.
4. Eat Right
Complex carbs alleviate your mood swings and food cravings, but don’t go overboard with the spaghetti, of course. Incorporate healthier carbs like oatmeal, lentils and grains to take your edge off cravings. Essential omega-3 fatty acids are also good for you during PMS as it supports healthier and stable moods.
5. Get Positive
Laughter is always the best medicine when it comes to mood swings, so whip out all those comedies you have stashed in your cabinet, or take a stroll down YouTube and catch your favorite stand-up comedian. Or if videos of cats is your thing, then use that. Laughter is the best antidote to mood swings, so keep smiling!
