If you haven’t noticed, the ebony hue is making its comeback in fashion and beauty, not on the eyes or clothing, but on the lips instead! Black lipstick can in fact by a little intimidating. But to us, black lipstick comes with a powerful statement that’s not just gothic, but we think of it as avant-garde and couture. A woman who wears dark puckers show she’s comfortable with her makeup, surroundings, but more importantly, herself.
Where do I get black lipstick?
You don’t need to invest in a black lipstick like you would with the perfect red, but if you’d like to recreate a black lipstick, it’s really simple! Simply pick out the darkest lipstick you have and combine it with black eyeliner.
We decided to play with our makeup collection and have our intern, Adrina to don a pair of pitch-black lips! We’re using Topshop’s lipstick in Depth, which leans towards a very deep aubergine that’s looks almost black. We found that using a very dark purple, combined with a black eyeliner gives the lips a great balance of matte and shine, and the hint of color keeps the face from looking too dull.

Because we still wanted it to have an edge, we lined her eyes with a thick cat-eye, and dusted her porcelain skin with a touch of illuminating powder around the cheeks, nose, forehead and brow bone.
And here are the results:
As you can see, the aubergine tint from the lipstick amplifies the lips without it looking too dull. And to keep the look slightly fresh, we pulled Adrina’s hair back into a simple ponytail for a cleaner look. We hope this look will be inspiration for you to try something for your next girl’s night out!
If you really bold and keen enough to try out the black lip, here are some very helpful guidelines to help look edgy and bold without looking goth:-
Avoid Black Clothing
Steer clear of black clothing as it’ll only amplify the ‘Goth’ look. The black lip already adds mystery and some vamp to your look, so make full use of this opportunity to play with colors. The picture below is a perfect example of keeping it edgy without looking goth.
Illuminate
If you have fair skin, look out for a slightly darker foundation shade that will make you look brighter. If you are naturally pale, brushing on some bronzer or illuminating powder will help give your look a little edge.
Experiment With Color
Just because black lipstick is already a statement on its own, it doesn’t mean you can’t inject a little color into the mix. If you’re attending a social event where creativity is open, give your eyes a boost of colors that will match your clothing. Opt for some cooler tones as it’ll create a balanced contrast against your lips.
Keep Eyes Bright
As you’ve already got deep dark lips, balance it out with a brighter eyeshadow colors around the eyes. Opt for shades with a light shimmer as they’ll help the eyes pop. Don’t forget to groom your eyebrows too as it’ll balance out a cleaner look. Finish off with eyeliner and mascara and you’re good to go.
Maintain, Maintain, Maintain
There’s nothing worse that wearing a wearing trying to pull off a dark lip when the color is beginning to bleed. As with any lip color preparation, start by exfoliating your lips with a toothbrush, and moisturize with a layer of lip balm. For more definition, use a dark red or purple lip liner as it gives your lips a hint of color and balanced contrast without looking too heavy. Fill in the lips, and apply the lipstick and even it out with a lip brush.
