The Romantic Comedy genre (or RomCom as they call it in the industry) is a movie genre that has become the go-to tip machine. Different from summer blockbusters, they consistently comfort and nurture our humanly need for companionship – but is it a good thing?
From time to time, we can’t help but indulge in the kind of emotions that fills up what’s missing inside us. Sometimes, it means turning on a chick-flick or romantic comedy and crying our eyes out with a tub of ice-cream by our side. And though, in that moment of watching the movie, there is a mixture of laughter and tears – there is just something about it all that pulls us in. As girls, we can’t resist a little romantic comedy on the weekend – don’t you think so?
But beware! There are a couple of dangers when watching these romantic comedies – it’s not only damaging to you in the moment, but it is dangerous in the long run.
Here are a couple of reasons why romantic comedies are in fact dangerous:
1. It creates a fantasy
It’s all because of romantic comedies and plain romance based movies that girls create this world what they think perfection is. From the way a guy should treat a girl, to dream weddings and romantic getaways that are kind of possible but not in the way the movies make them to be. In other words, romantic comedies create this illusion and fantasy on what love and relationships should look like. And, we’re not even talking about a relationship between couples, but also families and friends too.
2. It feels closer to reality
The only reason romantic comedies have this drag on us is because what ever is shown on screen is something that we all can somehow relate to. So, it does feel real and you tend to believe everything you see on screen, and hope for it too.
3. Sends off the wrong message
When watching a romantic comedy you can’t help believe everything you watch, and sometimes you can get hooked onto the wrong message. When you turn on a movie, for example, When Harry Met Sally, It’s always the question of will they get together, and we know for a fact that within the two hours of sitting around and watching the movie, that the two main characters will fall in love without a doubt and ‘live happily ever after’ – and that may/may not be a lie. As cynical as it may sound, sometimes, it doesn’t always end with a happy ends though it always is in romantic comedies.
4. Keeps you looking for ‘Mr.Right’
The more there are movies that come out about love and the ‘journey’ of find the perfect A.K.A Mr. Right the more woman get pulled into the bubble of finding exactly that. It’s like when we were younger and watched Disney movies and dreamed of being princesses, but in our older state, it’s still about being a princess, but specifically finding the Prince Charming to complete the entire dream.
5. It’s an emotional yoyo
After watching a romantic comedy… or a romantic film like, The Notebook – you can’t help but feel that specific kind of sadness for a good hour or two. Right? Or even perhaps through out the movie, it’s like an emotional roller coaster. From tears to laugher, it continues in that cycle continuously.
