How To Control Your Kid’s Freedom in Social Media

There’s no denying that just about every 12 year-old has a Facebook account, and is quite possibly an Instagram user. Kids are now strong users in the world of communication, and often times parents can’t decide if it’s better to disallow it, or embrace the fact that their kids can learn fast. Kids are often better iPad users than their parents, so it might seem that it would be better for kids to actually benefit from a gadget for cognitive development.

For teenagers, the internet is a great source for information for school assignments, to keep in touch with their peers and even as a source of entertainment. But we’re often faced with the questions on how much freedom should they be given. Here’s a few tips to help you give them controlled liberty with technology and social media.

1. Take control of their Facebook passwords and such. It’s important to be aware of what information they’re sharing with friends and strangers, that will help you keep guard of their safety.

2. A kid should have a healthy life that involves outdoor activities, and to not spend hours of their day on the computer. Whether it’s for school or leisure, limit them to an hour of the internet each time, and then followed by healthier activities.

3. Be aware of your children’s behavior on the internet. Kids often times react different on the internet. Whether it’s posting ‘graphic’ images of themselves, or putting up vulgar material, your kids should know that it’s not appropriate, and it will put them in danger.

4. Inform your children, especially girls that they should be careful about the pictures they put of themselves. Instagram for example, does not require an age limit, and because it’s an open portal, the public can easily gain access to your pictures. This opens the doors to trolling and even unwanted attention.

5. Sexting involves sending messages, pictures or even videos of sexual nature. Whether or not you suspect your child of doing it, let them know that they should never trust anyone with intimate photos of themselves, because once they’re out, it leaves them in a very difficult and embarrassing situation.
