While the music of Justin Bieber and One Direction won’t really entitle you to a lot of ‘cool-points’, a study has found that it’ll certainly make you a better person.

In the Netherlands, findings of a research shows that kids who listen to “unconventional music” like hip-hop, punk and trance, are more likely to become delinquents.

The study was tested on 300 children in the Netherlands were followed for four years of their adolescence. Information about their favorite types of music were taken down, and researchers also tracked incidents of ‘minor delinquency’ like shoplifting and vandalism, from the time where 12 til the reached the age of 16.

The results? The kids who were into hip-hop, metal, gothic, punk, trance and techno started to ‘act out’ and did so by the time they were 16. The researches predicted that kids who listened to mainstream pop, classical or jazz would probably not have a future of delinquency.

The authors of the research theorized, “Music is the music that separates mainstream youth from young people who may more easily adopt norm-breaking behaviors”. They also suggest that “in peer groups characterized by their deviant music taste, norm breaking youth may ‘infect’ their friends with their behavior”.  (Source)

What do you think of this conclusion? Do you fully agree with it? Is music really to blame for a child acting out?
