According to a survey conducted by University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), it appears that there is an alarming rate of sexually-active secondary school students with multiple sex partners. The research was carried out in 2011 among 1000 secondary school students (aged 15 to 17) in 50 schools statewide.
Faizah Abd Ghani, the UTM Education faculty lecturer who headed the research reported that about 10% of the subjects admitted they had sexual intercourse and some admitted to having intercourse with multiple partners. (Source)
She also added that students who took part in the research also admitted to having ‘friends with benefits’, where a friendship is based on sex minus any emotional attachments.
At a press conference, Faizah revealed that she intends to introduce a self-help kit that would help tackle the issue of casual sex among teens in Malaysia. Called the “Model Sayangku”, the kit includes a book on how to overcome their sexual urges and a log book to note down their process and how they’re coping with their urges. The guide book uses Islamic values to teach the importance of self-value. (Source)
Faizah also pointed out that the findings correlate to the increasing cases of baby dumping and abortions among teenagers. According to a report from the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM), about 257,000 babies were born out of wedlock in Malaysia from 2002 to 2012. “All this can be connected to sexually active teenagers,” said Faizah.
Faizah also added, “Most counsellors at schools are not well-equipped to address sexual issues and we hope this kit will provide guidelines to overcome this problem”.
The Johor Education Department and the Education Ministry has given Faizah rather positive feedback on the Model Sayangku kit.
