There comes a time when you want to be in a place with great ambience and relaxing music playing instead of being holed up in your room during the weekend. Lucky for you, there is such a place for you to do so and it is a place strongly filled with the aroma of freshly-brewed coffee. A cafe can be the right place for you to spend the rest of the day immersed in your newly-bought book filled with hearty quotes. Unfortunately, the coffee shop isn’t the main attraction in Kuala Lumpur as they’re just too many  franchises that often overshadow these other places to enjoy your Sunday brunch with a cup of great coffee.Thankfully, we have a lot of foodies and coffee enthusiasts who’ve searched high and low for these hidden gems.

Here are the eight cafes that we highly recommend!

1. Acme Bar & Coffee

Why we love it: Simple yet unique and comforting design and the laid back vibe makes us feel like being in coffee shop somewhere in New York City. Every thing makes us feel so personal and time seems to move slower when we are in the restaurant. Refreshing food and great coffee with great service provided.

Recommendations: Jackfruit cake/ Cappucino/ Salted Beef Eggs Benedict
Location: Unit G1 The Troika 19 Persiaran KLCC 50450 KL Malaysia

2. Antipodean Café

Why we love it: Originated from Sydney, Australia, Antipodean Cafe is a perfect social dining place that serves different choices of Western food. It is the premier choice to have breakfast or brunch here as they serve a generous amount for their big breakfast which includes. There are many different kind of sandwiches and salads which would make you come back again to try all types of sandwiches there.

Recommendations: Big Breakfast / Spinach & Mushroom Carbonara / Merdeka Coffee. It is better to go there as early as possible during the weekend. But if you don’t mind, this place is definitely worth a wait.
Location: 20 Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar Baru, 59100 Kuala Lumpur

3. Artisan Roast

Why we love it: The design of the cafe is rather minimal as everything is DIY. However, as they roast their own coffee beans, their coffee has an outstanding quality that keeps people coming back over and over again. The cakes and brownies are also recommendable but only very limited choices to make. The price is reasonable and no services charged! Artisan Roast Coffee Bar is definitely a great hangout place for a cup of coffee.

Recommendations: A great hangout place for those who are coffee connoisseurs.
Location: 4 Lorong Rahim Kajai 14, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, 60000 Kuala Lumpur, Selangor (TTDI outlet)

4. Journal by Plan B

Why we love it: By the look of the picture, you would know why. The creative decorations with tonnes of chairs hanging on the ceiling is what we didn’t expect to see in a cafe but fret not, they are very secured and very low chances of them dropping on you. In terms of food, they serve Western food as well as Asian food such as Nasi Lemak but Western food is more recommendable. The hearty breakfast is what we like the most about Journal by Plan B but the desserts and coffee are pretty good itself as well.

Recommendations: Eggs benedict/ Breakfast/ Macadamia Cheesecake
Location: Lot No. 65, Level G2, Publika, Solaris Dutamas, Jalan Dutamas 1, 50480 Kuala Lumpur

5. WHISK Espresso Bar + Bake Shop

Why we love it: There are some among us who prefers to drink coffee with good quality instead of consuming sweet desserts, and vice versa. But there are some of us who just wants the best of both world, and Whisk KL offers that to us. Even though Whisk Espresso Bar & Bake Shop is a rather small cafe located inside a shopping mall, but once you stepped inside the shop, the shop just gives off a completely different vibe which is really warm and cozy. Food wise, we must say the coffee is pretty good for normal coffee lovers and the desserts are definitely too many for us to choose, from pie, to cupcakes, to macaroons and cakes.

Recommendations: A hang out place for coffee lovers with sweet tooth. Red velvet cake is a must-try!
Location: G139, 1 Utama Shopping Centre, 1, Lebuh Bandar Utama, Bandar Utama, PJ. (One Utama outlet)

6. Real and Wholesome (RAW)Coffee

Why we love it : Perhaps it was the barista’s skill on brewing the coffee, or the advanced technology on brewing machine, the coffee is definitely bringing us a joyful experience. The food here is fresh and organic, pretty much a great place for those who prefer vegan food and healthy delights. It is located just a stone-throw away from the tourist attaction, KLCC, which makes it transport accessible.

Recommendations: Highly suitable for vegans and also those who prefer to go on a vegan-diet. Coffee is the best in the town so it was worth a try.
Location: Wisma Equity, 150 Jalan Ampang, KL.

7. The Red Beanbag

Why we love it: An Australia-inspired cafe with beautiful minimalist interior and exterior design, complemented with cozy ambience. The Red Beanbag also offers a fair amount of Western food, including eggs benedicts, burgers, French toasts as well hearty meals such as steaks and pastas. Desserts are also available for the sweet tooth but the salty meal and coffee are the much more popular choices for all.

Recommendations: Egg Atlantic V2.0/ Classic French Toast
Location: A4-1-08, Solaris Dutamas, 1 Jalan Dutamas 1, KL

8. Namoo on the Park

Image source: Namoo on the Park

Why we love it : We’ve been to coffee shop inspired by European style but Namoo on the Park is a rather intriguing cafe  as it is the first Korean dessert cafe and bistro in KL. Rest assured, this cafe is fairly easy to find as it is located beside the escalator near the entrance. The food here is a fusion of Korean food done perfectly with a modern twist of Western style. With Korean indie songs and occasionally K-pop songs playing in the cafe, this is a new favourite place for those who enjoy Korean cuisines as well as K-pop fans.

Recommendations: Bulgogi Beef Taco/ Sweet Potato Cake/ Rice Burgers/ Cheese Dokbukki (Cheese Rice Caje)
Location:  Publika, Level G3, Lot 4A , Solaris dutamas No.1 , Jalan Dutamas 1 , 50480 Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
