[REVIEW] Take the Crown by Robbie Williams

It’s Robbie Williams‘ ninth solo album since 2009’s Reality Killed the Video Star, and he’s back with a more confident pop record, Take the Crown.

Unlike most of his best ballads, like Better Man, Take the Crown finds itself in a very different from the Robbie we used to know. But then again, this formerly troubled pop star is now blessed with a happy family, so you could say that much has changed over the last 3 years.

Take the Crown is a pop record that will surely tickle the fancy of pop music enthusiasts, and we’re quite liking that he’s experimented with a lot of synths, some cheesy 80’s saxophone, but isn’t that the music trend right now? The album is certainly crafted with great skill, and to us, some bits of the album sounded like a collaboration between Sting and Two Door Cinema Club. Almost.

Among our top picks throughout the entire album had to be opening track, Be a Boy. “They said the magic was leaving me – I don’t think so”, croons Robbie to label his comeback. But

Candy, takes a back to a time when good old-fashion was a little cheesy but still memorable. Written by former bandmate/Take That‘s Gary Barlow, the track is hard not to dance to. The track carries a light-hearted presence that’s truly hard to go unnoticed.

Our favorite pick has to be Losers, an enlightened track featuring the vocals of American folk rock singer, Lissie. The mellow track plans to call a truce with the world. “There will always be someone better than you even if you’re the best. So, let’s stop the competition now, or we will both be losers”. A truly hair-raising experience, and a perfect finale for the album.

If you’re a fan of feel-good pop music, Robbie William’s Take the Crown is definitely something you want to add in your list. Let’s not forget that Robbie’s a mega British solo artist, even if his name’s hardly mentioned on the airwaves.
