Cervical cancer is caused when cell in the cervix slowly become abnormal, or even through the sexually transmitted disease, HPV. Regular Pap smears are the best wear to detect cervical cancer. January is a special time as it’s Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re sharing the stories of these celebrities who’ve faced the harsh effects of cervical cancer.
Judy Blume
Blogger and writer Judy Blume revealed that she had a hysterectomy around 17 years ago due to cervical cancer. She was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012.
Eva Peron
The former first lady of Argentina, also know as Evita was diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer in 1951. She kept a tight lid about her condition, telling everyone that it’s just a uterine problem. She died from the disease a year later at the age of 33.
Liz Lange
She’s a mother of two, and founder of Liz Lange Maternity. In 2001, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. She kept in silence as she was initially afraid of that she wouldn’t be there for her children, and would make business uncomfortable. Now, she’s cancer-free after intense treatment, and is also a vocal spokesperson for cervical cancer awareness.
Yvette Wilson
Actress Yvette Wilson practically lost her battle with stage 4 cervical cancer in 2012, and on top of that, suffered kidney disease. According to data, it is reported that African American women are more likely to die from cervical cancer as they have more trouble cleaning HPV, which usually goes away on its own in a year or so. She lost the battle and passed in 2012 at the age of 48.
Marissa Jaret-Winokur
The curvaceous Marissa Jaret-Winokur, know for her role as Tracy Turnblad in the the Broadway musical, Hairspray was diagnosed with cervical cancer after a Pap Smear in 2001. She underwent a hysterectomy, and her doctors were able to preserve her ovaries, giving her the miracle of the her son in 2008 through a surrogate.
Tamra Barney
You may remember her from The Real Housewives of Orange County appeared on the Dr. Oz show and revealed she has been diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2012. She was int he middle of removing her breast implants, when she discovered the truth.
