Dear Ms. Lipstiq,
I’ve been with my boyfriend for nearly a year now, and things are going really well for us. But, things don’t seem so good when it comes to his parents. When ever i visit my boyfriend for dinner or something, they seem to avoid me all the time. According to my boyfriend, his parents have been telling him that we are not right for each other and they have even requested for us to break up. I feel offended and hurt that they would say such as thing because they don’t know how i am, nor do they know what we and my boyfriend are going through. I’m really happy with him, and his parents just make it so much harder for us to enjoy each others company. What do you i do? Do i put my head down and pretend i don’t know anything or should I talk to them about it? Please advice me, Ms. Lipstiq!
Amanda
Dear Amanda,
In every relationships, there will be certain downfalls that we just can’t grip on to. But, one of the hardest problems to go through is the ones where parents are involved. The sad truth is, it’s nearly impossible to change their opinion on you, but it’s not impossible. First of all, you have to figure out what is the main reason they have this grudge against you. Is it something you have done or said? You have to know before you decide to confront them. You should try to get your boyfriend to question them about this situation, after all, being with you is his personal decision not theirs. But, try not to cross any lines or act to rationally. Respect can be earned, so you can find a way around this. We hope it all works out for you guys! Keep your chin up!
