So, you’ve taken a new step in life, and you’re so close to embarking on a journey to a successful career! Internships are one of the many great things about being in university – you learn more by being outside a lecture hall and you start building more contacts that could possibly help secure a bright future! As nerve-wrecking the thought of what an internship could be, we’re helping you take your first steps into a your career path with a simple guide on how you can survive your first internship.

Find The Right Internship
Most universities will give you the freedom to look out for the right place to pursue your internship. Much like a job application, start by working on your resume, filling it up with as much activities that will help give you the added advantage of impressing the employers. Craft a resume for each application you’re vying for, and don’t just take any internship that comes your way. Choosing any random internship can spell bad news – you want something that you know you’re passionate about and works toward your career path.
These tips will help you get your resume notice.

Know What You Want
Before you begin your internship, brainstorm and list down the things you hope to achieve with your internship, and think about how your internship will help you build your career. An internship is a great way for you to learn a thing or two about the industry you plan to get into. Sometimes, you’ll come to realization that this career may not be right for you, or you’ll realize just how much you want a life in this path. When you begin your internship, seek the advice of the employer and ask them what it takes to be successful in this line of work, and how you can improve yourself.

Give It Your All
Internships are your first taste of the working life that you want, and it’s important to remember that your performance is being evaluated by the employers. Sometimes, you’ll be lucky to have a company with flexible working hours, but there are chances where you’ll end up with a mentor from hell. Even if the working environment isn’t what you expected, do your best to excel anyhow. Doing your very best in an internship that you dread shows determination and versatility. And remember, your internship is a very subjective learning curve that determines how well you cope with the industry, so know your place and give it how much you can. After all, it’s only for a couple of months.

Stay Positive
Doing something big for the first time can be hard, and sometimes, you may end up with an employer that demands you to do things that you’re not prepared for, or something a little too menial for your taste. But all that running around will pay-off eventually – whether through a heart-warming recommendation from your employer, or a job offer at the company. So remember to focus on what you’ll gain in the future, instead of wishing you could be at home watching reruns of The Jersey Shore.
