Top 8 Musical Films Of All Time

We’re taking a look at some of the best musical films of all time! From the past to the currents – it’s definitely the kind of musical films that will keep your dancing and singing instantly.

1. Grease (1978)
Staring: John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John
Good girl Sandy and greaser Danny fell in love over the summer. But when they unexpectedly discover they’re now in the same high school, the challenge to rekindle their romance begins. Set in that 50-60’s vibe, you’ll be entertained by the sudden bursts of music and uber catchy tunes. Plus, who knew John Travolta could move like that.

2. Annie (1982)
Staring: Tim Curry, Albert Finney, Aileen Quinn
Based on the Little Orphan Annie comic strip, a young orphan girl goes through the adventures of finding a family that will take her in to be their own. What we love so much about this musical film is that fact that majority of the musical scenes are done by the children. Pretty impressive if you ask us! This a musical film that’ll make you laugh and cry.

3.  The Sound of Music (1965)
Staring: Julie Andrews, Christopher Plumer
The classic musical of all time. When someone asks you about a musical film, The Sound of Music is bound to cross your mind. The story revolves around a woman who leaves an Austrian convent to become a governess to the children of a Naval officer widower. She sings her way through the top of the hills and just gives that all around happiness vibe that we all want to get.

4. The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
Staring: Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon
The story of this musical film revolves around a newly engaged couple have a breakdown in an isolated area and must pay a call to the bizarre residence of Dr. Frank-N-Furter. This is a movie that really broke through several barriers – watch it and your jaws will drop.

5. Marry Poppins (1964)
Staring: Julie Andrews
This is a childhood classic to nearly everyone – Marry Poppins is known for the ‘supercalifragalistic’ puns and the cartoon/movie mix really brought things to a new level. As children, it was beyond entertaining to watch – and as adults, it’s still entertaining to watch! It also stars Julie Andrews, which did The Sound of Music just a year after this. Basically, it is about a ‘magic’ nanny comes to work for a cold banker’s unhappy family. She finds a way to lift their happiness and turns everyones frowns into a smile through singing and dancing.

6. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Staring: Judy Garland, Frank Morgan
The classic tale of The Wizard of Oz turned into a musical number – it’s a classic story and nothing beats this version. Judy Garland is the talent that puts the cherry on top. The story is about Dorothy Gale who gets swept away to a magical land in a tornado and embarks on special journey. You’ll just have to watch to find out the rest!

7.  My Fair Lady (1964)
Staring: Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison
A misogynistic and snobbish phonetics professor agrees to a wager that he can take a flower girl and make her presentable in high society. This was one of Audrey Hepburns most inspiring roles – she went from this movie to a whole load more of stardom. This movie and Audrey Hepburn combined, brought this genre of film to the next level.

8. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)
Staring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter
This was a movie that came to us by surprise. For a moment in time, musical films didn’t seems to make any appearance in the cinema, but then Sweeny Todd came in and with a line up like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter as the actors – no one could resists. The infamous story of Benjamin Barker, a.k.a Sweeney Todd, who sets up a barber shop down in London which is the basis for a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant, Mrs. Lovett. Based on the hit Broadway musical.
