London pop-indie band, Spector made their way down to Malaysia to give everyone a little indie treat last Saturday (6th October) and it was all thanks for Universal Music Malaysia and Topman!
Spector has already made a name for themselves in the UK, with a sold out show at London’s Electric Ballroom, support slots with Florence & The Machine, and appearances at the Coachella festival. The band members include, Frederick Macpherson (vocals), Christopher Burman (guitar), Thomas Shickle (bass), Jed Cullen (synth, guitar) and Danny Blandy (drums).
Q: How do you find Kuala Lumpur so far?
A (Frederick): We haven’t seen much of it yet. We’ve only seen Topman.. but if it’s just like topman, the we think we’ll love it very much.
Q: Have you heard of Malaysia before?
A (Frederick) : Ofcourse we’ve heard of it – we know about the food and stuff. We’ve been asking our manager to come here for ages.
Q: So, in the future, would you guys like to work with other writers?
A: Gary Barlow from Take That.. he seems interested. Then there’s Guy Chambers, Sir Tom Jones, Elton John… Rob Stewart. (Frederick starts singing *We are sailing… *) – the most moving performance i’ve seen ever was when Elton Jone sang at Prince Dianas funeral.
Q: Why music? Why not musical acting or acting?
A (Jed Cullen): I’m failing at acting. A (Frederick): Musical acting, i could see myself doing a little of that in the future. Doing a little bit of Les Mis… or something like that. But not broadway or
Q: Are you guys starting on your new album yet?
A (Frederick): We’ve got ideas bubbling, but we haven’t recorded yet. There are works in the process, but we’re not saying anything yet but there are people working as we speak. A (Chris): The laboratory is open.. and processing.
Q: Do you see competition with all the new bands that have come up, like One Direction and The Wanted?
A (Frederick): No! We’re way ahead of them. I’m joking. No, we don’t see competition with them cos they are pop groups… well, we are a pop group too, but we write our own songs and play out own instruments. Actually, The Wanted write their own songs too.. so they are a much more successful and happier versions of us.
Q: Would you guys ever want to work with a female vocalist – not just background, but in a full on duet? If so, who?
A (Frederick): Yes, we do want to work with a female vocalist one day. But, we have to find someone who we could help with their career. Like… Holly Vallance. Yes, Holly Vallance, write that down, and get her on the phone.
Q: Do you think men should take more pride in how they look?
A (Frederick): I think it’s whatever makes you happy. You need to have the confidence within yourself. I know some men who pluck their eyebrows to the extent their eyebrows until they look like two lines. But don’t over groom yourself.. no body wants to see that.
A (Jed) : Take care of your feet, that’s my number one tip.
A (Frederick): And be careful of nose hair… don’t do anything too invasive and clean your teeth at least twice a week.
Q: Do you guys iron your clothes?
A (Frederick): We don’t iron anything.
A (Danny): But, here’s a tip, when you take a shower hang your shirt in the bathroom, the steam with help with the creases.
A (Chris): But, another tip would be to get shirts that just don’t need ironing.
