With the kind of music that Florence + The Machine makes, it’s hard to imagine how it sounds live – but this MTV Unplugged album, has set it straight that they are true performers. There is also a special guest, Josh Homme who does a duet with Florence Welch.
The album consists of a mix of songs from the band’s two albums, Lung (2009)and Ceremonials (2011). A mix of their most popular songs were chosen.
When you think of acoustic and live performances, you only think that a piano, guitar and perhaps drums are included. But not for Florence + The Machines – we can hear several different kinds of instruments. You can hear a harp, violins and many more.
The key part of what makes this MTV Unplugged album sound so good is how powerful Florence Welch’s voice is. Her voice alone is an instrument to this album – with so much power and the right tones to fit everything.
Especially with a song like ‘Never Let Me Go’ and ‘Cosmic Love’ – the original studio version and the version on this album are so different, they almost sound like they completely different songs.
As for hit singles like ‘Shake It Out’ the version on their album Ceremonials and the version on this MTV Unplugged album is pretty satisfying because with a song like this – you still want to feel that extra power. Florence + The Machine’s did not fail to make you feel that extra shift through this song, whether it was live or studio recorded.
Sometimes, a live album can be a little bit of a turn off because it can be considered as ‘noisy’ compared to an actually studio recorded album, but with Florence + The Machine MTV Unplugged, it does not sound like a live album at all – infact, if there was no sound of the crowd cheerings and clapping you would think that this was a studio recorded album.
