They started out as an online boutique and would also participate in weekend fashion markets – they won an award for Best Malaysian Online Entrepreneur in 2010 by MOFEW. When things felt right, they decided that Quirky Brown Cow had to have it’s own walk-in boutique and in 2011, that’s just what they did.
Located in Bangsar, Quirk Brown Cow not only has a great selection of clothes, but the enviroment of the entire store is simply captivating. When you enter their boutique, you will feel as if you stepped into another era.
We had to oppertunity to ask the owner of Quirky Brown Cow, Juliah Tan, a couple of questions to find out what Quirky Brown Cow is all about.
A: Having my own fashion label has always been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. Graduated as a Fashion Marketeer from Raffles Design Institute, realizing this dream by opening a boutique is merely the first step towards achieving a much bigger goal.
A: I have a partner, Azlini Azhar, who joined me to open our first store in Bangsar. She is very hands on with the operations ofQuirky Brown Cow, despite being a full time mom.
Q: What is the inspiration that you had for the boutique?
A: The concept for Quirky Brown Cow was inspired by raw vintage-chic styling with a European twist in decor. Think washed out wood crates, old vintage luggages, red telephone booths, antique bicycle with rattan basket at the front. If we were a movie, I’d say we’d be 500 Days of Summer.
Q: Do you personally pick out every item in your boutique?
A: We hand pick each item as we’re very particular with the design, cutting, material, finishing and quality. It was also the same during renovation of our store in the beginning; we picked out every hardware and fixtures ourselves, down to the very last brick. It was a lot of work and running around but it’s all worth it in the end.
Q: Does the style in the boutique represent your personal style?
A: Yes. The boutique carries a wide range of styles from whimsical pieces to more simple classic designs and casual fun outfits. My personal style is also quite versatile; I can be very feminine today, edgy the next, or simply casual chic on my ‘lazy days’. Playing around with different styles and outfit is fun!
