The GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Sdn Bhd (GSK) with the support of the Ministry of Health Malaysia has introduced a new Behavioural Support Programme (BSP) to help smokers go through the journey of quitting.
The BSP comes under the QuitMasters Challenge – a programme which focuses on comprehensive methods to help smokers overcome their addiction to tobacco. BSP functions as a forum whereby those who would like to quit smoking would be able to share their experiences and monitor their progress at the same time. It is also opened to non-smokers who would like to learn more about the addiction that people have towards cigarettes.
According to Dessi Lavery, the Head of Marketing – Smoking Cessation, Asia, GlaxoSmithKline, smokers who would like to quit smoking would go through a few phases of relapse before they can completely quit. However the more they try, the closer they are to achieving their goal.
The entire journey to quit smoking requires a lot of support from friends, family members and everyone else around the person – this is why the BSP was introduced. According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey in 2011, 87.1% of the smokers in Malaysia are aware of the consequences of smoking but only 45.8% have thought about quitting.
