The MET Ball/MET Gala aka The Costume Institute Ball/The Costume Institute Gala is an annual fashion panache that brings together some of the world’s biggest celebrities, entertainment icons, and designers. Often nicknamed the “Oscars of the East Coast”, the event is among the most glamorous and star-studded nights of the year.
Much more so than the actual Oscars itself.
The sole purpose of the MET Gala is to celebrate the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. Hence, more reason for your favourite celebrities to grace the night all dressed to impress and some, dressed to kill.
To be honest, we would too. Or at least attempt to, if we knew we were attending the world’s top annual social event in New York City, hosted by the prestigious Vogue magazine.
Every year, Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour oversees the guest list (among other things) with Vogue staffers helping to sort out the list of celebrity invites. And this year, like every other year, the MET Ball’s cocktail hour and formal dinner saw an impressive ensemble of stars decked in what looks like a million and one bucks.
Oh Emma Stone! Never fails to look as cute as a button, especially so in her red Lanvin getup. Who says you can’t stand out against the red carpet, right?
Known for her extravagant but beautifully detailed gowns, Beyoncé steals the night in this Givenchy dress. Baby weight? What baby weight?
Christina Ricci attends the MET Gala 2012 fresh out of the release of her latest movie, “Bel Ami“, in a Thakoon dress. Truth be told, she looks like she hasn’t aged a day!
Some have raised disputes to say what an odd coupling they are, but we think they’re the couple of the year. Here’s Jessica Biel in a Prada number with her sharp-looking husband-to-be, Justin Timberlake.
Everybody’s (and Hollywood’s) sweetheart, Jessica Alba, takes breaths away in her golden bronze Michael Kors gown. We still can’t believe she’s a mother of two. Not while looking like that, she’s not.
“Gossip girl here, your one and only source into the scandalous lives of Manhattan’s elite”. Yes, you know it. It’s none other than Kristen Bell at this year’s MET Gala, in a hot Tommy Hilfiger halterneck dress. Xoxo!
Gwyneth Paltrow plays it up and by that we mean seriously plays it up in a short and backless Emilio Pucci. Getting leggy, we see. We don’t blame her – she’s got it, so flaunt it.
“GLEE” starlet Lea Michele looks amazing sleek and dazzles in her choice outfit for the night, a Diane von Furstenberg dress. Be still our hearts!
“Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” takes a little bit of dark with her offscreen and onto the MET Gala 2012 red carpet. Rooney Mara, you’re looking absolutely glamorous in that Givenchy!
What’s a gala/ball without a little bit of hip hop, right? Kanye West cleans up and attends the event in a Givenchy suit. We’re just glad your pants aren’t falling again.
Rihanna is almost fully covered up in Tom Ford, save for the display of her sexy back. We love it! And obviously, time and time again, Rihanna has always got it.
Call her your favourite “Angel” or your favourite “Transformers babe”. Either way, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is looking like a million dollars in her copper and black draped-back tulle Burberry dress. Sigh.
What? You didn’t expect a Waldorf to miss the socialite fashion event of the year, did you? Leighton Meester is glowing with pride in her Marchesa gown and getting a throng of photographers super busy!
And of course, who can forget the superhero every little girl wants to grow up to be? Natasha aka Scarlett Johansson takes a break from saving the world and opts for a Dolce & Gabbana outfit for the gala night.
Last but not least, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour herself. The queen of fashion makes everyone take a second look in her Prada dress. Wait, hang on. What does the “Devil” wear, again?
