In today’s day and age, the world of beauty and skincare has never felt more complex or more lucrative, with the Malaysian skincare market alone projected to generate a revenue of US$888.20 million in 2024. From expensive face masks to high-coverage foundations to vitamin C serums, the options and products available for clear and poreless skin seem endless.
This, however, hasn’t always been the case, especially for the co-founders of Malaysian beauty patch brand, Dododots, which is why they are now launching the world’s first concealer pimple patch product line – Dodoskin – in an initial five shades to suit a diverse range of skin tones — including in Malaysia. The shade names – Bagel, Peach, Pancake, Chestnut and Espresso – are all food-themed, in line with the fun, playful nature of the brand.
“As a teenager, I struggled a lot not just with the obvious physical appearance of severe acne, but also the psychological and mental impact,” Esther Erin, co-founder of Dododots shares. “Existing acne solutions were either medical products, with acne returning the moment you stopped using them, or far too obvious – topical creams and transparent hydrocolloid stickers – or makeup products only designed to address coverage instead of actually treating the pimple itself. I couldn’t help but wonder: why do we have concealer and pimple patches, but not anything that combined the two concepts into one?”
Initially, this was the core idea for Dododots during the pandemic in 2020. But for those already familiar with the brand, this may come as a surprise. After all, it launched in 2021 with creatively cute, uniquely shaped, and even holographic acne patches that are designed to be obvious and bright, with the intention of making users feel more comfortable in their skin. So why start with stickers that stand out instead of the more subtle approach they intended?
“At the beginning of the Dododots journey, our initial RM15,000 budget was rejected by suppliers, who needed a minimum commitment of 10,000 packs of patches for each colour,” adds Ethan Wong, co-founder of Dododots. “Since we wanted to provide multiple shades to suit a variety of skin tones, this simply wasn’t a fiscal commitment feasible for a company in its very early stages. However, we’re so proud of how far we’ve come over the years, and we’re now in a position to finally release the concealer pimple patch concept that got us excited to start the company in the first place!”
With the launch of Dodoskin concealer patches, Dododots aims to provide acne sufferers all over the world with not only a pimple patch that will blend seamlessly into their skin, but also actively address the root issue of the pimple itself using the natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil. Now, customers can choose whether they want to show off their spots or keep it subtle – and with the intention of expanding the product line with even more shades in the future, there’ll soon be a beauty patch for any occasion.
