If you think the British royal family is drama-less, think again, babe! If you really look into it, you’d find that the royal family is just as messed up as all of us are – but obviously, in a more subtle and discreet way. I mean, of course, their drama isn’t as cringy or meaningless – like the Kardashians’ – however, the royal family has their moments worth ki-ki-ing about.
If you’re wondering who the main character behind all the drama is, it’s definitely the late Princess Diana. I mean, you could go on and talk about your favourite Disney Princess, but for me, I’d say a true princess was embodied by Princess Diana herself.
What I love the most about her is, although she was married into the royal family and was constricted by the countless number of royal rules, Princess Diana never really let “those rules” limit her from being who she really was. Obviously, your girl don’t know her personally; neither am I a descendant of hers in any way, but I have done my own lil research and today, I present you this article.
So, without further ado, here are all the times Princess Diana went SAVAGE and broke royal rules, and probably pissed off the royal family.
1. Engagement Ring
One of the common practices for Princes/Princesses in the royal family when getting married is to pick a ring that is either made by the Royal Court’s Jeweler, or a heritage ring. For instance, when Prince William proposed to Princess Kate Middleton, he had chosen a ring that belonged to his late mother, Princess Diana.
Similarly, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry had picked her engagement ring from the Royal Court’s Jeweler. However, the late Princess Diana went against the royal rules and chose her engagement ring from a catalogue.
When asked why by Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, she responded by saying:
” Because it reminds me of my mother’s engagement ring and it is the same colour as my eyes”
2. Wrote Her Own Vows
Princess Diana was indeed a savage when she refused to say that she would “obey” her husband, then Prince Charles, during her recital of her wedding vows. In fact, Princess Diana wrote her own vows in which she only promised to “love him, comfort him, honour him and keep him in sickness and in health” – and, that’s all, ya’ll. The princess refused to “obey” the prince – and that is women’s empowerment on another level, bish!
3. Above-The-Knee Dress Hem
Princess Diana often wore her dresses with hemlines above her knees, which stirred drama back in the 90’s. As well all know, short skirts and short dresses were mostly frowned upon, even in the Europe of just a few decades ago. This is even more strictly practiced by women in the royal family.
Not for Princess Diana, however. The late Princess was often seen outside the palace with dresses that were above her knees and she still looked as elegant and as graceful as ever.
4. Wore The Queen’s Choker As A Headpiece
Princess Diana was always unique and captivating in her own ways. And she most certainly has her way of transforming royal jewellery into unique, chic accessories. If one is handed down a royal gem worn by the Queen herself, I’m pretty sure one would take care of that piece of jewellery, even if it means risking one’s precious life.
Princess Diana, meanwhile, while getting ready for an event, decided to wear a US$17 million dollar choker that was gifted to her by Queen Elizabeth, which originally belonged to Queen Mary. But the choker, which wouldn’t unclasp, would only go as far down as Princess Diana’s forehead – so she improvised and wore it as a headpiece instead. The fabulous audacity!
A true trendsetter, if you ask me – although, this new fashion innovation didn’t go down well with the royal family. Can’t say the Queen was truly proud of Princess Diana’s genius make-do moment.
5. Sent Her Kids To Public Schools
Princess Diana was known as the People’s Princess – and she truly was. Instead of sending her kids, Prince William and Prince Harry, to receive their education on palace grounds – like most children from the royal family – Princess Diana had them sent to public schools along with the general public.
Prince Willian and Prince Harry both attended Ludgrove School in London during their primary years and later received their high-school education at Eton College.
6. Exposed Her Children To A Not So Royal Lifestyle
As a Princess and a mother of two, Princess Diana was expected to raise her kids according to the royal lifestyle. However, she proved that she was a dope and cool mum, as she broke with royal rules and allowed her sons to dine at McDonald’s every Saturday, as well as exposing them to a not-so-royal lifestyle every now and then. Boy, did that upset the Queen!
7. Went Public About Her Marriage Conflicts In A TV Interview
As a royal, the last thing you would wanna do is expose everything that happens inside the palace on national television. Nah-uh – Princess Diana had zero concerns for her reputation or then-Prince Charles’s reputation, or even the dignity of the royal family.
She went public with all her marriage conflicts that she was facing with Prince Charles – especially on his cheating with now Queen Consort Camilla – in a TV interview that she did nine months before her divorce with Prince Charles. That TV interview has been recorded by history forever.
So, there ya have it folks. 7 times the late Princess Diana broke royal rules and proved that she was indeed a “pretty savage”!
