Merdeka Day is right around the corner, and with the celebration being smack dab in the middle of the week, we’re pretty sure everyone is either a) eager to commemorate our 65th year of independence, or b) looking forward to sleeping the day away. Anyway, most Malaysians know quite a bit about our country, from its fascinating history to interesting facts about the nation. (If knowing who our current Prime Minister is, and the date of our Independence is the extent of your knowledge, then carry on with your day).
But what about other facts to do with Malaysia that you may not know about? Facts that sound ridiculous and made up, and make you think, “That’s not true”, but are in fact completely true. A local Reddit user recently posted this on the platform: What is a fact about Malaysia that sounds made up? Tell me the most interesting thing or fact you know about Malaysia that sounds made up! – and boy, oh boy, were there a lot of responses!
So, in conjunction with Merdeka, we present to you the most “ridiculous” facts about our country:
#1 Game Of Thrones
Now that we think about it… it’s kind of true.
#2 A Big Hole
One reddit user commented that the island looks like an Among Us character twerking – and we can’t unsee it.
#3 An Egg-cellent Invention
Without this, we’d always have hard-boiled eggs. Thank you Datuk Hew Ah Kow, your invention is gr-egg-ly appreciated.
#4 I Want To Ride My Bicycle ~
I mean… fair, I guess.
#5 No Worrying Over Malaysia Over-Populating
And yet, there’s still a lack of sex education in our schools…
#6 Bumiputera WHAT??

Of ALL the places in the world… why does THIS cave have to exist in Malaysia? It’s upsetting.
#8 Rotting Rafflesia
There’s a rotten-smelling parasite in our country and we’re just living in it.
#9 Credit To Malaysian Taxpayers
At least the movie won a few awards… that has to count for something, right?
#10 Negaraku = Mamula Moon (?)
Plagiarized may be too strong a word for it. Let’s say… inspired by.
#11 It’s Still The Same Chicken!
Only in Malaysia would an international food chain change its name to suit the country’s… insecurities.
