With over 500 billion cookies sold, the world’s favourite cookie, Oreo, celebrated its 100th birthday on the 6th of March in a worldwide celebration in more than 20 countries around the world. The first Oreo cookies were born in the National Biscuit Co.’s Chelsea Market factory in Manhattan and today, Oreo has over 25 million Facebook fans! In fact, they even set a Guinesss world record for the most likes in a single Facebook page within a 24 hour period last February and is now one of the top 5 brand Facebook pages in the world.
There were “flash birthday parties” in seven cities in the United States, a celebration bus tour in 100 cities and towns in China, a giant pop up playground in Indonesia, the cutting of the world’s largest cake in Saudi Arabia and the breaking of 100 piñatas in Venezuela!
So what did Malaysia have in store for its Oreo fans? Why they whisked hundreds of Malaysian families up into the sky via hot air balloon rides!
According to Jason Chin, Marketing Director of Kraft Foods Malaysia, “Turning 100 is a landmark acheievement and indeed a special privilege, as it signifies the love generations of consumers have had for Oreo over the years. The famous “Twist, Lick and Dunk” (TLD) ritual has been at the core of many heartwarming family moments. This celebration will also serve as a glimpse as to what to come in the next few months.”
The “twist” ritual was conceptualized in 1923, followed by the “lick” in 1950 and finally the “dunk” in the early 1990s. By the way, did you know that Oreo has only been in the Malaysian market for just 3 years?
Attendees of the exclusive by-invite only event were also treated to Oreo-infused food and beverages such as Oreo milkshakes, Oreo cupcakes and Oreo Cheese Tarts. Over 300 fans were selected to join the birthday celebration held at Padang Astaka, Petaling Jaya over the past weekend.
There were also other fun-fair inspired activities to keep families entertained throughout the evening where winners would get to win more, that’s right, Oreos!
There was also a demonstration of the “Twist, Lick, Dunk” ritual by the little ones at the celebration, with a glass of milk at hand of course! An Oreo Mobile will also be heading to a town near you very very soon to bring you these happy family moments in which over 1 million free Oreos will be given out! There will also be a secret event planned out in the works later this year so keep your eyes peeled for that!
