Spring/Summer 2017 takes fashion back to the drawing board, re-defining a confident look with exaggerated lines, metallic effects, graphic prints on new-generation trenches and bright candy pink and sunshine yellow. With colour and light as watchwords for the season, see the trends to look out for in 2017.
1. 80s Glam
Only God knows how massive our love for the disco scene is. Think high shine metallics, neon leggings and over the top one-shoulder dress, the ’80s is back in style, everyone! They sure have a big influence on the coming spring season, and it’s definitely not for the shy types.
2. Pink Is Back
While Green may be chosen by Pantone as 2017’s colour of the year, Pink are back in business in every possible shade and hue imaginable. You can’t escape it, and why would you want to? It was in every collection on the runways, it warms every skin tone, and is known to evoke feelings of sweetness and romance.
3. The Deconstructed Wardrobe
Off-the-shoulder tops have been given new life last year and thankfully, it isn’t going anywhere. On the contrary, it’s getting even more interesting this time around. Designers are inviting us to push the envelope with clothes that are meant to be layered unexpectedly and outfits that come deconstructed.
4. Stripe Away
If you’re not into florals, perhaps you’d be interested in a statement striped ensemble, which are now basically the equivalent to a basic white t-shirt. Prepare to see a lot of bold primary stripes in every kind of shape and silhouette. For the daring fashionista, mix and match with a different width stripe or an opposite print.
5. Psychedelic Prints
No, we’re not letting you go just yet, ’70s fashion. This season, psychedelic prints are trending big time with concentric circles, metaphysical patterns, surrealistic images and pulsating designs which are painted in the most vibrant colours to glorify your whole ensemble.
6. Ruffles
Exaggeration was a key trend for Spring/Summer 2017. Ruffles, voluminous sleeves, and nods to the Victorian era made Spring’s most covetable dresses decidedly romantic, and a touch more dramatic than your typical dresses. If you’re not open to the concept yet, wait till you try it on yourself first.
7. Athluxury
Fine, we had mixed feelings when Kim K did it last year, but now that we’ve seen the bigger picture, Athluxury (not to be confused with athleisure) could be one of the masses’ favourite look in 2017. It’s a lot less street-wear and more about easy elegance. Like a tight cropped top paired with loose, uber cool tracksuit.
8. Bad Girl Look
Whether you were in the bad girls club in high school or you wanted to be, 2017 is giving you a second chance. You can expect high fashion slogan tees mixed with ladylike silhouettes in unusual fabrics. This trend is definitely not for the faint of heart as it’s bold, eclectic, and sprinkled with just the right amount of leather.
9. Overexposure
We’ve already seen a resurgence of bodysuits and play-sets in 2016, but prepare yourself to start seeing a lot more skin in 2017. Bralettes and swimwear-inspired bra tops will dominate this season. Best for those who carry a lot of confidence (and not so much cleavage), bra tops will be the go-to base layer. Pair it with an oversized maxi skirt or cropped denim, and start doing crunches now.
10. Holographic Memory
Yas. Not only are rainbows and unicorns still having their moment, but holographic patterns have gone beyond last year’s obsession to 2017’s Spring cult favourite which can be found on technically everything from lip gloss, nails, accessories and fashion garments. Urban mermaids or space warriors? Pick your favourite look.
