India and a good majority of the world is rightfully furious with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) head Ranjit Sinha and his remark about rape victims during a conference on Tuesday. The CBI is India’s premier investigative agency, equivalent to the FBI.
The conference Sinha spoke at was about illegal sports betting and the need for the government to legalize gambling. He said that if the state could not stop gambling, it could at least make some revenue by legalizing it. These were his words:
“If you cannot enforce the ban on betting, it is like saying, ‘If you can’t prevent rape, you enjoy it”.
Sinha’s remarks has caused an outrage throughout India, but Sinha defended his comment, saying that it was taken out of context and misinterpreted. Communist Party of India leader Brinda Karat said although the comments were not meant to cause hurt, the statement itself is offensive to women everywhere.
“It is sickening that a man who is in charge of several rape investigations should use such an analogy,” Karat told reporters. “He should be prosecuted for degrading and insulting women.”
The remarks made by Sinha has further incited anger among the Indian community after the brutal attack on a young woman in New Delhi last year. The incident has stirred nationwide and global outrage, urging the government to enforce stricter rape laws. A satire video has even been made to mock the Indian government’s approach to prevent sexual assaults.
