This one’s especially for mala food lovers – and it is a must-try.
It was lunch time at the office again and this time, I wanted to eat something light. So I walked straight to the mall and suddenly: ‘what’s that wonderful smell?”.
Every time I approach the third floor of the mall, I sense this unique, savoury kinda smell and I was really curious as to what it was. Turns out, it was Jipinhe!

Have you had Chinese scones before? Consider it like curry puffs, but with mala beef filling and that’s what you’re gonna get at Jipinhe Scones. Located on the third floor of Mid Valley Megamall, its delicious and savoury scones are a must-try. And of course, you can’t miss out on this eatery simply because it is super easy to spot. Although the size of this eatery is small, it still provides space for customers to dine it. The best part is you can even watch them bake your delicious scones and prepare other food from their menu.
Jipinhe Scones is a prominent Shanghainese franchise that has just expanded to Kuala Lumpur. It serves up distinctive mala meals that combine Shanghai and Sichuan flavours. They also specialize in freshly baked, handcrafted scones. A variety of savoury meat ingredients are stuffed into the flaky and crumbly pastry. And in one bite, the luscious filling explodes on your tongue, giving you a mouthful of flavours.
As mentioned, Jipinhe offers various fillings in its scones. Here are their popular flavours:
- Sichuan Mala Spicy Chicken Thigh
- Black Pepper Beef
- Savoury Shrimp & Chicken Thigh
- Sweet Tomato Chicken Thigh With Corn
So, I went with their Black Pepper Beef scone. It was served hot, right out of the oven. The price of the Black Pepper Beef was RM8; their other scones are below RM10 – kinda worth it. At first, I was skeptical about the size. It looked small (or maybe it was just me) but after taking a few bites, it was definitely filling.
Now remember I said these scones are exactly like curry puffs? The most definitely are – only better! The entire scone was bursting with filling. Most often, when you buy pastry with fillings, you will only find a little bit of filling but a lot of pastry, which is frustrating. However, at Jipinhe, I’m glad to say the amount of filling is super generous.
Now, for the taste. Since I selected the beef scone, I expected it to be juicy and tender, and that’s exactly what I got. The meat was super juicy, full of flavour, and the onions really paired well with the beef filling. I even thought it was a black pepper dish – it wasn’t at all spicy (maybe it was my tongue or they kept the spicy level super low!).
Apart from scones, their must-try is the their signature handmade noodle dishes. Their real hot and sour noodle soup is spicy and tangy in equal measure. The mala flavour isn’t too numbing, but if you want your food spicy, you can ask for it to be ‘extra spicy’!
Another ‘not to be missed’ dish is their bean jelly noodles. This handcrafted chewy bean noodle is brimming with flavour, mixed with spicy sesame sauce and sprinkled with hot chilli oil! Furthermore, their signature fragrant tomato soup rice noodle is the ultimate rainy-day comfort dish.
If you’re wondering about ‘halal’, well, the Mid Valley outlet is most definitely halal – but the other outlets might not be (just check out their menu or ask if you’re curious). Other than that, I would highly recommend you give this eatery a try.
Take a bite of Jipinhe Scones and enjoy the delightful flavour!
