Prepare for more memorable looks from Cruella de Vil! Following the success of the first prequel film, and the film’s recent win at the Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Costume Design, it was recently announced that Emma Stone is confirmed to return for the Cruella sequel.
According to Deadline, Emma agreed to reprise her role as Cruella in August 2021, after the first live-action Cruella was released on May 18, 2021, in both cinemas and on Disney+ via Premier Access owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cruella was a huge success for this hybrid format. When the sequel was announced, Endeavor executive chairman Patrick Whitesell, who works with the Oscar winner, issued a comment on Emma’s Cruella 2 pact.
“While the media landscape has been disrupted in a meaningful way for all distributors, their creative partners cannot be left on the sidelines to carry a disproportionate amount of the downside without the potential for upside,” he said. “This agreement demonstrates that there can be an equitable path forward that protects artists and aligns studios’ interests with talent. We are proud to work alongside Emma and Disney, and appreciate the studio’s willingness to recognize her contributions as a creative partner.
Despite being released in theatres and on Disney+ Premier Access at the same time, Cruella grossed over $233 million at the box office and $54 million in PVOD viewership.
Emma is the only confirmed Cruella 2 cast member so far – however, it’s quite likely that the majority of the original ensemble will return. Jasper and Horace, played by Joel Fry and Paul Walter Hauser, are Cruella’s lifelong henchmen, thus it would be surprising if they didn’t return. Mark Strong might possibly reprise his role as John, who was still residing at Hell Hall at the end of the film. Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Anita Darling, and Kayvan Novak as Roger, should have a bigger role in the Cruella sequel.
Emma Thompson’s character on the other hand, may be in prison, but she’s not going away quietly. “I’ll get even,” the Baroness says after Cruella is detained. The Baroness is cruel, and she isn’t finished with Cruella yet.
Cruella 2 is technically a sequel to the predecessor of 101 Dalmatians. Although no official plotline has been released, the sequel will most likely chronicle the next stage of Cruella’s journey now that she has completely accepted her wicked persona.
