Only 9 days left in Ramadan – so what are you doing about it?
One of the nicest things to look forward to during Ramadan is the exceptional, one-of-a-kind offerings from restaurants and hotels – and The RuMa Hotel & Residences is no different, because they offer that one-of-a-kind experience made just for you.
The RuMa’s lavishly decorated guest rooms and suites, with stunning views of the city’s iconic skyline, not only pay homage to their surroundings, but also embrace a new type of guest experience unlike any other in the region. Once you arrive at The RuMa, it’s like you’ve entered a world that revolves around you. Designed to entice Malaysian palates, the 5-star luxury hotel is putting a twist on its culinary offerings, after visitors recently requested that real Nyonya dishes be served at the hotel’s restaurant, ATAS.
ATAS
ATAS, the hotel’s three-meal modern eatery, is easily accessible from the lobby’s innovative grand staircase and on the mezzanine level. As soon as I went in, I felt as though I had reached a transcending space. Warm tones were used throughout the large area, which was lighted by spotlights and pillars, and complemented by a copper roof. The reflection of the lights added to the weightlessness of the large black tiles, which provided the appearance of a bottomless floor. There was a big double wrought-iron staircase with a spectacular golden robe in between that looked like a kebaya on closer inspection.
ATAS takes diners on an unexpected culinary trip through the peninsula, rediscovering real flavours, spices, ingredients, and products of local provenance and presenting them in the contemporary fashion that Executive Chef Tyson Gee is known for. The cornerstone of this firmly local destination restaurant for KL inhabitants and The RuMa guests alike is hand-picked local vegetables and heirloom ingredients, coupled with a touch of alchemy.
A de-formalized dining area is built around a kitchen that is organically incorporated into the restaurant space and celebrates local, artisan traditions in aesthetics, materiality, and craftsmanship. Its outside verandah adds to the restaurant’s offerings. The environment felt super cozy and homely, and you’ll never regret dining there. The seating was spacious and convenient, and the staff there were super friendly as well as helpful in catering to the needs of their guests.
And for Ramadan this year, ATAS has brought back its popular Hidangan Tradisi buffet, but with a Nyonya twist, now with takeaway and delivery! The culinary staff at ATAS contributes more than 50 years of collective cooking experience to its ‘Hidangan Tradisi – Edisi Nyonya Buffet.’ There was seriously a lot of food to choose from and I didn’t even know where to begin. From savoury to appetizers and desserts, you would be spoilt for choice.
Some of the highlights for this year’s buffet is the ketam cili, kari kepala ikan, daging masak lemak cili api, ayam pongteh, and more. Of all the savoury dishes, I really enjoyed the Rendang Tok. The meat was tender and it was full of flavour that I could have it as is, or with some rice. The briyani was also great and the presentation was cool. There’s a whole piece of meat hanging above the rice platter!
And not just that, you won’t have to worry about missing out on iconic Malaysian dishes like ketupat pulut daun palas, serunding ayam, kuih ketayap, six types of kerabu, assorted lemang, rojak buah, crispy snacks, a variety of satay with kuah kacang and a vast choice of kuih muih. I love the way they presented the satay. The peanut sauce and satay were placed in ceramic pots, with only the peanut sauce over a small fire. Although the satay seemed warm, the minute I poured on some sauce, I instantly got a hot meal. The satay was flavourful and tender and yes, they have two types of satay – chicken and lamb.
There’s also the not-to-be-missed dessert section, with treats such as bubur cha cha, pulut tai-tai, cendol and onde-onde, and Swiss Roll cakes, available for those with a sweet tooth. My favourite dessert would be the cendol, of course. In a tiny bowl filled with red bean and pandan jelly, covered with a smooth layer of coconut shaved ice and gula melaka syrup, this treat is to die for. I’m not really a cendol person, but I could tell there’s something different about this one. Unlike regular ice shaved cendol you get at roadside stalls, this shaved ice has a coconut flavour. And the minute you put a scoop in your mouth, you’ll be on cloud nine. I love how the texture of the shaved ice was so smooth, almost like ice cream. Plus, it was also fun to see how they prepared the cendol using the ice shaving machine.
Another treat I loved was the kuih ketayap. This pandan rolled crepe filled with grated coconut and palm sugar was not only sweet but freshly made on the spot. The crepe is made before hand, but they assembled it on the spot. The wide choices of local delicacies and desserts really got my eyes bulging! And to finish off your meal, you can settle for a cup of hot coffee and teh tarik – or try their refreshing Sirap Bandung, Soy Milk and Asam Boi drink. There’s definitely a lot going on in this buffet spread!
