2. Tatcha
In Japan, the common phrase “mottainai” means “too precious to waste” – this has greatly influenced Tatcha to be more conscious of their consumption of the natural world as they realize that our beautiful planet is too precious to waste. Apart from the sustainable materials used in their packaging and ensuring social and environmental responsibility when it comes to sourcing for their product ingredients, Tatcha is also very involved in reducing their carbon footprint.
Tatcha has decided to offset their carbon footprint from shipping not only going forward, but going backwards since Tatcha was created. This accounts for all emissions resulting from all transportation, including the movement of raw materials, empty packaging to fillers, inventory to their warehouse and finally, all of their shipments to their clients and retail partners.
3. Drunk Elephant
Drunk Elephant’s first priority has always been the safety and effectiveness of the formula. However, their entire Hair and Body line also comes in recyclable packaging, as well as selected products like Wonderwild Miracle Butter, A-Gloei Maretinol Oil, A-Passioni Retinol Cream, Beste No.9 Jelly Cleanser, E-Rase Milki Micellar Water and Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil. At this time, in order to protect their formulations, the pumps available are not recyclable. However, when the option becomes available, Drunk Elephant will be the first in line!
4. Hourglass Cosmetics
Vegan and cruelty-free luxury beauty brand Hourglass Cosmetics expanded its sustainability initiative with the introduction of the award-winning Confession Refillable Lipstick in 2017, and the customisable Curator Eyeshadow in 2021 (utilizing refillable packaging innovation). Hourglass Cosmetics aims to continue to decrease their footprint of single-use plastics in the future by exploring new reusable packaging alternatives. Evidently notable from their latest launch, the Hourglass Vanish Airbrush Primer bottle is made from 100% glass.
5. Origins
Origins believes it has a responsibility to give back to nature and endeavors to make choices that help reduce its impact on the planet. Today, all Origins cartons are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, and made with paperboard from responsibly managed forests. 55% of Origins’ packaging by weight is recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled, or recoverable. By 2023, Origins’ goal is to ensure that at least 80% of packaging by weight is recyclable, refillable, reusable, recycled, or recoverable.
6. Philosophy
Philosophy is transitioning to being Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. Philosophy’s formulas rely as much as possible on biotechnology and responsibly sourced ingredients to minimize their impact on nature. Their folding cartons are made of 100% FSC certified, responsibly sourced, recycled paperboard and their new packaging includes post consumer recycled glass or plastic. This applies to all finished goods cartons for newly produced sellable products as of January 2022, which includes the new Hope In A Jar 2022 range.
