Theodor Seuss Geisel or more famously known to the world as Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved American authors when it comes to children books. He published 46 books characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of trisyllabic meter. Many of his books have been adapted into movies such as Horton Hears a Who!, The Cat in the Hat and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and the latest book to receive Hollywood treatment is The Lorax, all 61-pages of it.
Seuss’ birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day and it is also the same day targeted for release of The Lorax movie by this year which began work four years ago with a budget of $60 million.
The Lorax tells the story of a magical creature called, you guessed it, the Lorax who is guardian of a land of cotton candy like Truffula Trees and cheery creatures such as the Humming-Fish and Bar-ba-loots. One day, industry moves in and chops down all the trees, in the process polluting the air and water. As a result, the animals and the Lorax are forced to seek another home, until someone can make things better again. The tale is told by the businessman who polluted the land to a small boy who comes to visit.
The film however tells the story of an idealistic little boy named Ted (Zac Efron) who seeks the affections of a girl named Audrey (Taylor Swift) in the little town of Thneed-ville where everything is completely artificial. It is Audrey’s dream to see a real tree so Ted sets off to look for one and in the process realizes that their city is closed from the outside world. There at the borders he meets the reclusive Once-ler (Ed Helms) who tells Ted how he met the Lorax (Danny DeVito), the guardian of the land albeit a grumpy one, as a young businessman.
Once-ler then introduces a revolutionary invention from the native Truffula Tree’s tufts which tragically spirals into a mass overproduction leading to the forest’s destruction and isolation of Thneed-ville. With the Once-ler’s blessing, and the last Truffula Seed, Ted sets out to remind his town of the importance of nature.
