New trends emerge on a daily basis now that almost everyone can become a content creator on TikTok. We’ve seen the dances, the quirky challenges, glow-up transitions… it’s constantly changing and there’s always something new. Not to mention the amount of makeup and hair trends that have come and gone over the past few years. If you’ve been keeping up with hair trends, you might’ve heard of the Wolf Cut or the Shag – if you haven’t, they look something like this:
They look cute, right? But one thing these hairstyles have in common is that you’ll have to sacrifice a good portion of your hair to achieve this layered and volumized look. So, if you want this type of hairstyle, but also want to keep your hair long, the Octopus Haircut might be the best look for you!
The reason why it’s called the ‘Octopus’ haircut is due to its shape, which looks similar to the shape of the octopus emoji. But for the fans of the 90’s hit show ‘Friends’, it may remind you of the iconic ‘Rachel’ haircut!
To put it simply, the Octopus haircut is basically an evolution of the Shag. It’s a less textured version and has shorter layers throughout the front and long layers at the back, keeping the length of the hair. What makes this hairstyle unique is the bangs. You can either go with curtain bangs that reach just above the eyebrows or go with some fringes that frame the sides of your face.

Hairstylist and Aloxxi brand ambassador, Leonardo Rocco, told InStyle that this hairstyle is best suited for people with straight and wavy hair, with shoulder-length to long strands, due to the shape and layering. The best part is that it flatters all face shapes!
Though this style appears to be effortless and carefree, it still requires some upkeep. Rocco recommended going in for a trim and shape every six weeks to keep your cut looking natural. However, because it won’t weigh down your hair, simply air-drying it will suffice to style it and give it a voluminous look.
If you’re curious about how this haircut is done, some TikTok hairstylists have shown us how they achieve it:
