Chinese New Year is steadily approaching, the feeling of anticipation and excitement for the spring festival is also growing! Besides the heartfelt family reunions, another thing that we most look forward to is indulging our taste buds in traditional Chinese New Year dishes! Whether they are homecooked meals or prepared in a Chinese restaurant, these dishes are essential in every Chinese New Year reunion dinner.
Steamed Fish
A Chinese reunion dinner would not be complete without a classic steamed fish. It can be any whole white meat fish (i.e. Snapper, Chinese mud carp, Catfish). The reason why so many families like to enjoy this simple yet delicious dish during this festive season is that it symbolizes wishes for abundance in the new year.
Spring Rolls
A spring festival automatically calls for spring rolls! This crispy delight symbolizes wealth and prosperity and is a must-eat during CNY. Depending on your families’ preference, the combination of its filling can vary, but they are generally savoury dishes.
Dumplings
Like the spring rolls, this savoury delicacy symbolizes wealth. It can either be boiled or fried, and the meat filling inside also varies depending on the preferences of families from different backgrounds.
Yusheng / Lo Hei
One of the most anticipated delicacies during this festival is the Yusheng (or in Cantonese, Lo Hei) dish, which symbolizes prosperity. Its colourful look, combined with its unique taste, are certainly not to be missed during Chinese New Year. Though what makes this salad dish a standout is definitely the tossing of the colourful ingredients. The main ingredients usually involve raw fish, shredded vegetables, and a variety of sauces.
