Aishwarya has won numerous awards, including two Filmfare Awards, and was honoured in 2009 by the government of India with the Padma Shri and in 2012 by the government of France with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Born and raised in a traditional Tulu-speaking Bunt family, Aishwarya is the youngest daughter of her army biologist father and homemaker mother.
Aishwarya if fondly referred to by her family as “Gullu” (her nieces and nephews call her “Gullu Mami”), and the name has caught on among the press and even her legion of fans.

While filming Dhoom 2, she met the love of her life, superstar Abhishek Bachchan, and the duo got engaged on 14 January, 2007.
As per the traditional Hindu rites of the Bunt community, the wedding vows were made on 20 April, 2007 in a private ceremony at the Bachchan house, in Prateeksha, Juhu, Mumbai.
Upon their marriage, which was widely reported in Indian media, the duo was dubbed the most popular super couple of the Indian film industry.
Not too long later, Aishwarya gave birth to a beautiful daughter, Ardana, in 2011 and took a break from the industry for a couple of years to fully embrace motherhood.
In 2011, Aishwarya earned a lot of negative publicity for not losing her post-pregnancy weight. Undaunted by the petty criticism, she proudly walked the red carpet at the “AmfAR Cinema Against Aids” gala at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival for the 11th time.
Aishwarya is the first Indian actress to become a jury member of the Cannes International Film Festival.
In October 2004, a wax figure of Aishwarya was exhibited at the wax museum of Madame Tussaud in London. After her dearest father-in-law, Amitabh Bachchan, she was the sixth Indian and the second Bollywood icon to receive this honour.
The same figure was on display at Madame Tussaud’s Museum in New York’s Times Square in 2007.
