As we all know, the OG skin exfoliator is alpha hydroxy acids (AHA)! It cleanses the skin’s uppermost layer, resulting in a brighter and more even complexion. Whereas Beta hydroxy acids (BHA) exfoliate the skin in a more thorough manner to help remove pore congestion.
The Ordinary’s AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution provides both deeper exfoliation to combat apparent blemishes and improve skin brightness. Upon continued treatment, this product promises to enhance the appearance of skin complexion and eliminates the presence of fine wrinkles!
This peeling solution is made up of 30% alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic/lactic/tartaric/citric), 2% beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), hyaluronic acid cross polymer, vitamin B5, black carrot, and Tasmanian pepper berry.
A Tasmanian Pepperberry extract is included in this recipe to help minimize irritation caused by acid use. This compound is of plant origin and changes in color seasonally, which may be visible in the formula from time to time. This solution also contains a cross polymer version of hyaluronic acid for comfort, vitamin B5 to aid healing, and black carrot as an antioxidant.
Literally a beauty potion y’all!
This formula has a pH of around 3.6. The principal AHA used in the formula, Glycolic Acid, has a pKa of 3.6, and pKa is the most vital aspect to address when formulating acids. Acid availability is indicated by pKa if you didn’t already know… When pKa is close to pH, there is an optimal balance of salt and acidity, enhancing acid efficacy while minimizing discomfort. Higher pH levels in this situation would add salt, which would make the formula even more irritating than if it were more acidic.
So how do we experiment and use it at home?

Ladies, beware of sunburn! This product contains AHA and BHA, which may enhance your skin’s sensitivity to the sun and increase your chances of being sunburned. Apply sunblock generously and refrain from being under the sun for a couple of days to witness optimal results!
