Living in tropical weather with intense humidity can take a toll on your hair, making your scalp oily and itchy, resulting to limp strands that fall flat. Due to the hot weather, we tend to sweat more and that’s one of the reason we have to exfoliate and cleanse very-so-often to maintain a clean and oil-free skin. We do exfoliate our face and body, but what about our scalp? Shampoo and conditioner alone is not sufficient to give you a healthy set of hair. Even your scalp needs an occasional scrub cleanse to remove any deeply rooted dirt and impurities that get in the way from achieving fresh-looking bouncy hair.

No doubt environmental factors affect our lifestyle, and that’s probably why we ladies have to increase our shampoo schedule in a week to maintain our tresses from oil, sweat, and inflamed scalp from all that buildup. By including scalp scrub in your hair routine, rest assured it can really lift all that oil, leftover product, and overall gunk that seems to stay put in the heat. Of course you can opt for either chemical or natural option, but the latter has proven to be a more effective and healthier option.

Because we love anything DIY, here’s a go-to concoction for a balanced, invigorated scalp which only contains four simple ingredients.

Sugar is used as an exfoliant as the gentle granules can mechanically remove all the debris without scratching up the skin. As for the emollient, jojoba oil is used as it closely resembles the natural oils in your skin. It also feeds your skin with abundance of nutrients and moisture. Then we have the apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil, both touted as hair care wonders. The acidic nature of apple cider vinegar helps to balance the microbiome of your scalp while adding natural shine to your hair by sealing the hair cuticles. Tea tree oil is known to manage mild to moderate dandruff. It also aids in healthy hair growth.

How to Make an Apple Spice Sugar Scrub ⋆ Homemade for Elle

Below is the simple yet effective scalp scrub recipe:

Ingredients:

2 to 4 tablespoons jojoba oil

2 to 3 tablespoons finely granulated white or brown sugar

1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Couple of drops of tea tree oil

Directions:

1. In a large mixing bowl, add your jojoba oil, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, and sugar. Mix until it forms a paste. You may want to add your oil tablespoon by tablespoon until you reach your desired consistency.

2. Part the hair in sections and apply the mixture to different areas of your scalp. Use the pads of your fingers to scrub, scrub and scrub, but gently.

3. After scrubbing, allow the ingredients to soak in for a few minutes to really infuse their healthy vitamins and nutrients.

4. Wash out thoroughly before shampooing and styling as usual.

If you want to give your hair a deep cleanse, we would highly recommend this four-ingredient scrub, each lauded for achieving healthy hair.
