Low Swee Siong will never look at Valentine’s Day the same again.Yesterday he was awarded full guardianship, custody care and control of his daughter, 13-year-old Low Bi-Anne, ending a four-year legal battle over her custody with his ex-wife.
The Form One student was interviewed by High Court judge Justice Yeoh Wee Siam for an hour, resulting in the verdict. Justice Yeoh also allowed Bi-Anne’s mother, Tan Siew Siew, 38, to celebrate Chinese New Year with Bi-Anne once every two years, allowing her to go to England, accompanied by her family members if she so wished.
When interviewed by reporters after the verdict Bi-Anne expressed her joy and looked forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day with her father. Bi-Anne’s case was monitored closely by many parties as it was highly controversial and it’s verdict could have most likely changed the precedent of cases in the Family Court.
Low and Tan were married in 1999. The couple divorced in 2006, and custody of Bi-Anne was given to the father.
However in 2008 , Tan filed in a case to claim custody over the child and was granted such. Bi-Anne insisted that she wished to remain in Malaysia with her father , resulting in multiple appeals.
Although Low Swee Siong had spent a fortune on this trial, it was definitely worth while to have won this case and being able to be with his only child.
