We spend hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to treat our hair to ensure it’s in the best health condition. Chemicals used in saloons for hair treatments are loaded with chemicals which do more harm than good in the long run. These chemical-laden products are made from unsavory ingredients ranging from lead and sodium hydroxide to dibutyl phthalates and formaldehyde – with a host of associated health effects that are disconcertingly dire.
These does not mean that the products you pick up from the store shelves are going to kill you, but having a chemical-free and natural option is always best. We have sourced out a list of one-ingredient hair masks to tackle your hair complaints without having to spend a fortune at the saloon. Since these ingredients are readily available in the comfort of your kitchen, you can choose to do it as and when you like. It’s always fun to mash food on your hair, right?
Eggs
We know eggs are great to eat, but they’re also packed with essential nutrients needed for a healthy set of hair. Eggs are rich in protein, vitamins, essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Use both, the yolk and whites for normal hair, whites for oily hair, and yolk only for dry hair. Leave on for 20 minutes and then rinse with tepid water, and shampoo.
Cornstarch
This is a great hack for greasy hair. Cornstarch is basically dry shampoo from your pantry with similar application method. Simply take one tablespoon of cornstarch and sprinkle it all over your hair or specific greasy spots. Leave it on for a generous 10 minutes and let it work its magic. Brush it off and see immediate results!
Yogurt
People with any hair types can benefit from yogurt. This is particularly helpful for those who tend to have dry hair and flaky scalp. It helps to add moisture to your hair while keeping it cool. Massage half a cup of full fat yogurt onto your hair and scalp, and let it sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as usual.
Avocado
If you find it difficult to style your extreme frizzy hair, behold the avocado! Simply mash an avocado and apply it on your hair. Avocado’s oils and vitamins will do wonders to smoothen the aggressive frizz. For added boost, incorporate a tablespoon of yogurt or egg yolk into the mixture.
Honey
Honey is a key ingredient in many homemade remedies due to the array of health benefits it offers. Its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties make honey the best solution for itchy, scaling, and dandruff concerns. Take 2 tablespoons of honey and mix it with warm water. Apply the mixture on your scalp and massage gently for a few minutes. Cover your head with a shower cap for 3 hours and rinse as per usual.
