Believe us when we say we’re OBSESSED with makeup, but by far the most fun part of it all boils down to eye makeup. Whether you’re looking to simply accentuate your eyes or add a vibrant pop of pizzazz, eyeshadows reign supreme and lucky for you, the ever blooming beauty industry currently extends a dizzying array of textures, formulas, finishes and effects so you can experiment to your heart’s content.
Granted – Not everybody was born to master eyeshadow application and some formulas are more forgiving than others. Here are three of the most common formulas and how you, too, can knock it out of the park! Pro tip – Regardless of the formula, always start slow and gradually build up the pigmentation you desire instead of plopping down too much colour at once. Any mistakes will be way more difficult to fix and you risk having to remove everything only to start over again.
1. Powder
Powder eyeshadows are perfect for beginners as they are, after all, the most effortless to blend. They often come compressed in a pan or loose in a little jar, and in a variety of finishes including mattes, satins and shimmers. It is very convenient to use just the fingers for simpler one or two-shadow eye looks, but brushes often offer a more precise application for more complex looks. Don’t forget to blend, blend, blend and blend again to avoid harsh lines!

2. Cream
Cream eyeshadows are way better than cumbersome powders in our books, whether they come in a pot or a stick. Here’s why – They often show up more vibrant and consistent, they are mostly easier to blend and more importantly, they don’t budge and last for hours on end. Powders sometimes do not work on oilier eyelids, so creams may just be the answer. Also, certain cream shadows look multi-dimensional with just a few swipes of the finger – perfect for lazy days.

3. Liquid
Liquid eyeshadows mostly come in tubes that resemble lip gloss and while they may be easy to apply, they are tricky to master. For starters, liquid eyeshadows crease the easiest so you may want to allow the product to dry for a minute or two in between applications. With that said, it is also the most versatile of the lot. You can use it as a base for your powder eyeshadow to grab onto, an eyeliner with a fine, thin liner brush or a pop of glimmer on the centre of the lids.
