To many, micro-blogging website Twitter is just another “free for all” social media platform. But to those who know how to use it wisely, it’s the very thing that can make them, their business, or their status stronger. Or break them.

The Shorty Awards (also known as the “Shorties”) are an awards event that honours top short-form content creators. Since 2008, the people behind the Shorties (tech entrepreneurs Greg Galant, Adam Varga, and Lee Semel of Sawhorse Media) have invited Twitter account holders worldwide to nominate the best “twitterers” from various Shorties categories such as humour, news, food, design, celebrity, actor, actress, art, so on and so forth.

They have since expanded to recognize even other social networking sites such as:

Tumblr
Foursquare
Facebook
YouTube

As of 2011, the Shorties had 30 official categories and five special categories.

The Twitter awards also included the “Real-Time Photo of the Year”, “Foursquare Mayor of the Year”, “Foursquare Location of the Year”, “Microblog of the Year on Tumblr”, and the “Connecting People” awards on top of accolades to recognize the best uses of social media by brands and agencies.

Last year’s, the 3rd Annual Shorty Awards was held in New York City on the 28th of March 2011 and here are some of the notable winners:

This year, we’re looking at a fresh new list of nominees for the Shorty Awards 2012.

Among some of the iconic social media fanatics handpicked by the board and voted for by tens of thousands of “twitterers” across the globe are such as Justin Bieber, Miley Ray Cyrus, Selena Gomez, deadmau5, Britney Spears, Ian Somerhalder, Dwayne Johnson, Instagram, J.K. Rowling, Paramore, Epic Meal Time..

..the list goes on!

Since it was created, millions of people have visited the official Shorty Awards site every year without skipping a beat to tweet their nominations for their favourite “twitterer”. We already know which social media icons are definitely getting our votes!

The question is, have you voted for yours yet? Go here to vote!

The Shorty Awards 2012 will take place sometime in late March this year in New York City. To stay updated, go read their blog, or stalk them on Twitter.
