92-year-old Datuk Haji Habib Mohamed Abdul Latif, the founder of iconic jewellery retailer Habib Jewels, has passed away this morning (4th April 2018) at Gleneagles Medical Centre.
According to his grandson Mohd Shamir Habib, the late jeweller had a fall in his bathroom and lapsed into a coma two weeks ago. He later died of old age.
His body will be taken to the Kapitan Keling Mosque for prayers here before burial at the Muslim cemetery in Perak Road, Penang. A large stream of mourners has gathered at the family mansion in luxury residential area Pinhorn Road to pay their last respects to one of Penang’s visionary entrepreneurs.
Datuk Habib’s humble beginnings date back to 1958 when its first shop was set up in Penang on the bustling Pitt Street, then known as “Jewelers’ Corner”. The little shop still stands today as a nostalgic reminder of how the family business began.
Under the helm of the founder’s son, Dato’ Sri Meer Sadik Habib, the company’s retail business soon flourished. Habib Jewels Group now owns a number of other brands under its wing, namely Pandora Malaysia, Pandora Brunei and Ice Watch Malaysia.
